If Carlsberg made chess clubs….
Welcome to Hackney Chess Club, proud winners of the English Chess Federation Club of the Year award for 2016-17. As one of the biggest and certainly friendliest clubs in the UK, we pride ourselves in giving a warm welcome to anyone who loves the magical game of chess. So whatever your level, from beginner to grandmaster, we would love to hear from you and we will find you a place in one of our eight teams covering different levels in the London, Middlesex, Essex County and 4NCL leagues. Aside from team chess, many of our players also play in individual tournaments throughout the year.
We provide free coaching for talented young players and we welcome players from Hackney’s vibrant ethnic communities, women and juniors to join us. Aside from our busy league schedule we meet and play socially across the borough.
Saturday evenings from 19.00 is our legendary beer and blitz sessions at the Rochester Castle – you’ll find us in the conservatory in the back of the pub.
We also run a monthly club night at the Clarence Tavern where club members analyse famous games as well as their own games, along with discussions on opening theory and endgames. We will be posting the 2019 dates some time in September after the summer recess so please watch out for our announcements here and on our Facebook page.
We will also be announcing our schedule for junior sessions after the summer break.
There is also social chess every Thursday from 7pm at the The Elderfield Pub, 57 Elderfield Road, Lower Clapton E5 OLF (between Chatsworth Rd and Lower Clapton Road). On Sundays there is chess at the Cock Tavern, 315 Mare St, London E8 1EJ from 3:30pm. These events are run by local chess enthusiasts and everyone is welcome.
There is no charge for these events.
Our outreach work included occasional sessions in the Rio Cinema, Clissold Park and summer festivals in Walthamstow and Camden. And the best news is that there is no cost – we only charge subs to people who play five or more league games for us during the year.
So if you live in or near to Hackney, or if you are visiting London and fancy a few games of chess, please *contact us *or come along!
