If Carlsberg made chess clubs….
Welcome to Hackney Chess Club, proud winners of the English Chess Federation Club of the Year award for 2016-17. As one of the biggest and certainly friendliest clubs in the UK, we pride ourselves in giving a warm welcome to anyone who loves the magical game of chess. So whatever your level, from beginner to grandmaster, we would love to hear from you and we will find you a place in one of our eight teams covering different levels in the London, Middlesex, Essex County and 4NCL leagues. Aside from team chess, many of our players also play in individual tournaments throughout the year.
We provide free coaching for talented young players referred to us through the buzzing primary school chess scene in Hackney and we welcome players from Hackney’s vibrant ethnic communities, women and juniors to join us. Aside from our busy league schedule we meet and play socially three times a week across the borough.
Saturday evenings from 19.00 is our legendary beer and blitz sessions at the Rochester Castle – you’ll find us in the back of the pub.
Tuesday evenings from 6.30pm we meet at The Clarence Tavern 102 Stoke Newington Church Street, N16 7LA. This is our club night where we have presentations by members on different aspects of chess.
Thursday evenings from 19.30 at Pembury Tavern
Our outreach work in Hackney also includes occasional sessions in the Rio Cinema and Clissold Park and summer festivals. And the best news is that there is no cost – we only charge subs to people who play five or more league games for us during the year.
So if you live in or near to Hackney, or if you are visiting London and fancy a few games of chess, please *contact us *or come along!
