Golden years end as London League moves to Holborn

It’s the end of an era – after 23 years the London League is moving from Golden Lane to Holborn in a plush new venue, Citadines Apartment Hotel (94-99 High Holborn). Yes, we will miss GL’s freezing foyer made all the more freezing coming out of the gents, we will miss the bar and especially the ubiquitous Pam with her rallying call: “Don’t you bring no chess sets down my bar”; and we will miss the weightlifting boot camp aka moving tables and chairs onto the stage at the end of the evening.

Citadines is the perfect location, one minute walk from Holborn tube, loads of buses and free parking in Red Lion Square and its surrounds after 6.30pm. And with excellent facilities (we will be using two adjoining conference rooms) including bottomless teas and coffees and bottled beer available at reception, what more could a Hackney player want? “A Wetherspoons, please,” I hear you say. Worry not, there are two tried and trusted Wetherspoons, Shakespeare’s Head on Kingsway, and Penderel’s Oak on High Holborn. And if you go for a pre-match pint to Shakespeare’s Head it may get you to play right (enough puns Mr Secretary, improve your own damn grade).

Our disciplinary code remains the same:

No paparazzi shots coming out of Tiger Tiger at 3am; no singing ‘one-nil and you ****ed it up’ to King’s Head players as we beat them 5.5-4.5; and please do not bring flasks to fill up with the free teas and coffees.

The fixtures will be out soon, games will be played from October to May (excluding December) on Wednesday evenings.

Up the Hackney!
