Mateo takes the honours in first HCC junior tournament

On Sunday 9 July we held our AGM which was preceded by the club’s first closed junior tournament featuring 12 of the club’s promising youngsters. Excellently organised by first team captain Bob Eames, the six-round Swiss was enjoyed by all with Mateo di Miguel taking first prize with an impressive 5.5/6 (including a remarkable escape in Round five with a clever forced stalemate when all looked lost). Brothers Joe and Alex Thorne finished second and third respectively and there was a good showing by Joe McSweeney, Freya Gunby and five year old Leon Zarchan who each got two wins in their first competitive tournament. We hope to put on a bigger junior tournament later in the year. A big thanks to all who took part and for the Gorki in providing refreshments. Said club secretary Mark Rivlin: “This was an excellent tournament showing that we have strength in depth at the club and we look forward to organising more junior tournaments.”
